VT - Quechee State Park

What was planned as a parents-only weekend to Vermont for the Covered Bridges Half Marathon became a family weekend when we got the call from a teary 9 year old who wasn't loving his sleepover weekend with his friend (we were only 15 minutes from home...so of course we turned around rather than burden the parents with a crabby sad sack.)  It all worked out well, though, as we had a great time as a family hiking to Quechee Gorge, splashing in the rapids, and playing some volleyball and horseshoes.  Oh yeah, and the park had a rec program on Saturday night - make your own fried dough!  Perfect carb-loading before the race ;)

We were on site 6, plenty of room for us.  This park is really close to Quechee Gorge Village and was easily bike-able or even walkable to restaurants, shopping, and of course site-seeing at the gorge itself.

It was so unseasonably hot and humid that the cold water felt great!

So after some shuffling around and a quick round of rock-paper-scissors on Sunday morning (race day), we decided that I'd run this one and Kevin and Theo would be the cheerleaders.  Gorgeous scenery along a great course with lots of neighborly crowd support, just really really hot and muggy...especially for Vermont in early June!  But I made it and finished feeling good thanks to the great volunteers at the water stations, and the wonderful neighbors along the late part of the course who were outside with sprinklers and squirt guns! :)

We will definitely be back for this one next year - Kevin needs a turn at this great race, Quechee State Park is a great little park, and hopefully the weather will be more seasonable then.
(note for next year: battery operated fans for sleeping!!!)
